Synopsis of School History

  • A small, enthusiastic grup of people came together to learn Irish In Bishopstown G.A.A. Club in November 1982 with Pádraig Tyers as the "múinteoir".
From this, a hardworking Committee of "Glór na nGael" was formed and began by establishing a "Naíonra" in Bishopstown.
  • The group won the prestigious national "Glór na nGael" prize, and the President of Ireland at the time , Patrick Hillery, visited the area to present the prize.
  • With the help of Gaelscoileanna and the permission of the Department of Education, Gaelscoil Uí Riada was founded in September 1984 under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Cork and Ross.
  • Máire Uí Dhuinnín was employed as the first principal of the new school, which opened its doors on the 10 September 1984 in a room provided by the S.M.A. Fathers adjacent to the church in Wilton.
  • The Bisopstown Community Association rented rooms to the new school in 1986. Prefab rooms were provided by the Department of Education. More teachers were appointed as the popularity and reputation of the school spread.
  • The school continued to grow and prosper and further rooms were added each year until the school was fully grown.
  • The "Orchard" site in Wilton was purchased as the site for the permanent school building for Gaelscoil Uí Riada. The sod for the new building was turned by Michéal Martin T.D. in 1998 and our "new" school opened its doors in November 1999.
  • Anois, i 2022, tá 15 múinteoirí agus 279 dalta sa scoil.
